Reflections of 2013

Overall 2013 wasn't a bad year. I've come to see it as a year that will lead to bigger and better things. I quit my day job to pursue my art, moved to a smaller town and celebrated my first wedding anniversary. I always knew my path would be a bit of a long and windy road so this year rendered me a tad bit impatient to get things going but art is a funny thing. Just when you feel you've figured yourself out you find something that inspires you even more. I was convinced that I was done with patterns and surface design.  I'd fallen in love with illustration, gouache and the world of landscapes and interiors. Turns out patterns and surface design are not done with me. I don't know what led me back but after not being able to sell any work I'd had a professional illustrator evaluate my work and he encouraged me to dig deeper in developing my own surface design style. My OWN style?! I suppose I never contemplated doing that before. I sat down and dug deep, did a lot of research and sketched until my hand hurt. After a few failed trials it just poured out of me. I've loved fabric and patterns since I was girl and I've loved all the travels I've done throughout the world. Every country I visit I try to find some form of fabric or fiber art, of course it all made sense. Why hadn't I seen it before? Well when you are listening to creative directors, "trends" and sales analysis you begin to lose faith in your voice. I don't think I've found my full yelling voice yet but in 2014 I will along with making a living from my art and patterns. I have any resolutions or goals for 2014 it will be that and to do everything with love and positivity. Until then I will be quietly working away in my studio, getting better bit by bit.

I Still Believe in Unicorns

This new print is for everyone who still believes in something imaginary as everyone should. I believe it's good for the spirit to think beyond the realm of "possibility" and "reality".

Finding that signature style

I had a lot of fun creating this piece. Nothing is more satisfying than a folk floral! I've been going crazy designing new pieces for my new website and shop and to be honest I couldn't be happier. This is the most personal work I've ever produced. There is this wall artists and designers have when they quit the corporate design world and the instructions of a creative director- like a creative identity crisis. This is where you keep making work until you find your "signature style". For me it was overspending way too much on art supplies, making many pieces that were kind of me but didn't really reflect me, which I'm guessing is why I was having a hard time selling my art.
After having an awful time trying to sell my artwork at craft shows and online I went back to the drawing board and delved a little deeper as to what inspired me and my personal tastes were.
I decided to start designing wall art and patterns again. I'm a pattern designer first and foremost and I love art that is fun, happy and colourful. Since I did those things the designs have been coming out of me nonstop. I hope you enjoy them as well! Since the holiday season is just around the corner these will not be available until the new year in my shop. Should anyone have a request earlier please don't hesitate to contact me by email!

Pink and Black Therapy

I can't get enough of this pink and black colour combination. So much fun to look at and design!

I don't quite know how this pattern happened but it's much more fun than reality, no?

New Characters

I've been designing some fun new characters using vectors, my knowledge of pattern, texture and a lot of imagination with a ton of trial and error mixed in between there somewhere. These are a start to a new direction in the surface art market I am aiming to get my foot into.

A New Direction

After much experimentation I think I finally have a new direction. I'm loving and have always loved sketching very loosely in ink, I've taken that loose style and adapted it to the bright, bold and large loosely drawn shapes. I think I've been quite stuck because I was forcing detailed imagery which is not my forte and never has been. I quite like the freedom here and how happy the colours are.
Who says Tuesdays aren't great!

Fancy Folk

I suppose I strayed from my pattern design self for a while because well I just did! I looked around my house and things and my love of patterns is everywhere in my home and life. For the first time in a long time I'm designing patterns that I love. Thanks to the Lilla Rogers Make Art that Sells e-course, my love of pattern and surface design has been re-ignited.  I designed my Fancy Folk ceramic surface designs today. The bold patterns made me happy to look at.

New Series and The Toronto Indie Arts Market

I'm very happy to announce that I will be selling work this Saturday at the Toronto Indie Arts Market. Please come and support local artists and craftspeople this Saturday if you have a moment. Partial admission proceeds will go to a great local organization Not Far from the Tree, which picks and distributes all the fruit trees that people cannot harvest themselves and puts them to good use.
I've also started a new series which I have been very excited to start about abandoned towns and desolate places.

Back to School!

Well its been a crazy first week of class!
My assignment for Lilla Rogers- Make Art that Sells is finished. Balancing a full time job and two classes is like a fine art that I have yet to master. I'm not 100% in love with my piece but I am satisfied. Here's my process:
My painting sketch

My digital drawing
My painting sketch
My Final Piece

My final piece with complimentary patterns. I decided to combine digital components with a scan of my painting. I wish I had a bit more time but I have a family wedding and it's Thanksgiving here in Canada. So I need to finish early. I am ready for the next assignment!
Happy Turkey Day!

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!

It's almost turkey time! Fall is my favourite time of year.  In Canada, Thansksgiving is in mid October. This year it will be on Monday, October 14th. I'm not really into turkey but I love stuffing and yams, spiced with cinnamon, cloves and allspice. So if you know anyone in Canada, don't forget to wish them a Happy Thanksgiving on the 14th!

The Halloween Party

It's October! This means that Halloween is almost here. This is a watercolour & gouache sketch for an upcoming piece. I've always loved a haunted mansion story, especially when it all comes to a head (no pun intended) in the library during the masquerade ball... you guys can finish the rest.

Back to School!

My new website is finally up! I like the cleaner and more streamlined look where everything is together and more cohesive. It's all coinciding with the new course I will be taking as of tomorrow called Work/Art/Play and the Lilla Rogers- Make Art that Sells course I will be taking in October.
I'm going to be one busy lady! I'm hoping that it will be worth it. I'm really wanting to transition over to being an illustrator as well as some other ventures I want to start within the next year. I'm throwing it out there into the universe now as well as some love and pixie dust so that my new ventures will happen in a positive way.
Please have a look at the new website! http://agnesschugardt.com/
Have a great week!

A Ride through the Woods

I think I watched way too many period pieces this weekend. There is always a shot of someone racing in their carriage through the woods. I know that cars are faster and have changed the way people move around but there is something so romantic and esthetically pleasing about the horse drawn carriage.

Inspiration and Etsy news

I've been expanding my subject matter greatly since the spring. It all started with a trip to Kipawa, which is just north of North Bay, Ontario. We rented the most amazing quaint cottage one could ever ask for. I brought my paints and the travel easel my husband bought me for Christmas and began to paint the gorgeous scenery. Now, it took a frustrating few times to get into the groove because people are my primary subject matter. When I did though, it felt amazing! The painting in my mind really reflected how happy I was up there so I've decided to paint more landscapes and expand my subject matter to interiors as well. That being said, I've put some of my favourite pieces up for sale on my store!  These are just  some of the new items for sale!

Pls check out all the new items as well as keep a look out for an upcoming sale! I know it's way to early for Christmas shopping but the fall will come before we know it and for early birds I will have some free shipping days.

On another note, I've purchased some amazing new books to keep me inspired and creative. These were just a few of the amazing finds from our trip to Maine. I was in a bit of creative rut and these charged me right back up and they were such a steal!

Anniversary

Today is my 1 year wedding anniversary. I'm feeling a little sappy so I'm posting what I'm aspiring to turn into an anniversary or I love you card for my shop.  Getting away to the woods & camping is something my husband and I love to do and in our world there's nothing more romantic than sitting in front of a lovely fire. Here's my ode to the adventures of marriage.

Making pictures come to life

This is my first attempt at making my paintings come to life and learning how to make animated movies in photoshop and little quirky gifs out of my paintings.  I made the first one on makeagif.com which is easy and you can use it if you don't have photoshop. The second one I actually made the animation myself in photoshop using the animation window. I could have played with it for hours, changing all the time sequences of the blinking eye but I stopped myself after a few tries.
I had a lot of fun with this, the pictures take on a whole new feeling when they start to move. They are a little creepy because only the eyes are moving and they aren't smiling as was the trend in the old days but that's what I was going for!

In other news. I'm re-instating this as my blog, for frustrating reasons with dwindling traffic and being forced to shell out way too much money for generating traffic and other customer service issues I have with my new webhosting company.

Sketchbook Thursdays

This post is about that awesome sketch you cannot wait to turn into a painting or illustration that just does not quite turn out. I know it's not good to talk about the failures but we all have them and this one had been making me rip my hair out. Perhaps I am tired and can't quite get there as I've been burning the candle at both ends this week.
Here she is, the sketch that just won't translate. If you have any advice on how to cure this one please don't hesitate. They say that some mistakes are inspiration for greater things. I hope that is the case here.
Pls check my new Etsy store for more Mothers Day art for sale this weekend!

Mothers Day Art

I've been wanting to do a painting of a mother and child for Mothers Day for a long time.
I started with a simple sketch

Then I tweaked it a little and transferred the idea to canvas
Then the details
This is the first one. I'm going to do the exercise of painting it twice maybe from another angle. Whichever one wins is going up for sale as a painting and discounted prints! So check the store next week!

This is a pencil study of a portrait I will be painting of my mother as a young woman. Step 1 of healing process started.
